Mawlana Seikh Nazim Haqqani

[Journalist Shafiq Morton has a brief look at the historic visit of the Shaikh to Cape Town, South Africa, in November 2000]

I had been fortunate enough to accompany the Shaikh together with his son-in-law, Shaikh Hisham Kabbani, in the United States in 1998 for a period of three weeks. During this time we toured New York, visited the United Nations and met with politicians on Capitol Hill in Washington.

Also part of the entourage were the muftis of Albania and Kosovo as well as the Chechen president, Aslan Maskadov. These activities were the precursor to the 2nd International Conference of the Islamic Supreme Council of America in Washington.

As the resident photographer I was privileged to witness first-hand something of the essence of the fortieth Grand Shaikh of the Naqshbandi Sufi order, an order that traces its lineage back in a "golden chain" to the Prophet Muhammad [SAW] through his greatest companion Abu Bakr as-Siddiq [ra].

In 1998 I wrote that Shaikh Naazim was a spiritual colossus of the twentieth century. And while his contribution to the inner peace of humanity will never win him a Nobel Prize, it has to be remembered that at least half a million people have embraced Islam at his feet.

His murids (or followers) are said to run into millions and include heads of state, pop stars, and even allegedly Prince Charles. In that regard, I once heard Shaikh Naazim say that he was a collector of souls.

Of this I have no doubt, as in America I saw non-Muslims become mesmerised by his spiritual luminosity. In one instance I remember a crack junkie becoming a Muslim after meeting the Shaikh for two hours and in another, a CNN journalist saying shahada after hearing him speak.

Movement during Dhikr

Movement during Dhikr
Written by Shakyh `Abdal Qadir `Isa

Movement during Dhikr (remembrance) is a good thing because it brings energy to the body for that act of worship. It is permissible in Sacred Law, as proven by the narration of Ahmad in his Musnad, and al-Maqdisī with sound narrators from the Hadīth of Anas radīallahu `anhu that said: "Once, the Abyssinians were dancing in front of the Messenger of Allāh sallallāhu `alahi wa-sallam , saying in their language: ‘Muhammad is a righteous servant.' He sallallāhu `alahi wa-sallam said: "What are they saying?" It was said: "[They are saying] Muhammad is a righteous servant." When he saw them in that state, he did not censure them. Rather, he approved of their act. It is known the that rulings in Sacred Law are taken from his sallallāhu `alayhi wa-sallam statements, actions, and tacit approvals. Since he approved of their action and did not censure them, it is clear that it is permissible.

Salawat Al-Fatih (durood Fatih) -very Powerful

Salawat Al-Fatih (durood Fatih)

Salat Al-Fatih is held in particular esteem with the Tijaniyya Order. In English, it goes like this:-

O God bless our Master Muhammad (pbuh) who opened what had been closed, and who is the Seal of what had gone before, he who makes the Truth Victorious by the Truth, the guide to thy straight path, and bless his household as is the due of his immense position and grandeur.

the above transliteration is :-

Allahumma salli ' wa sallim was baarik ala Sayyidina Muhammadil

nil-fatihi lima Ughliqa wal khatimi lima sabaqa wan-naa-siril-haqqi

bil-haqqi wal-hadi ila Sirati-kal-mustaqima sal-lal-lahu 'alayhi

wa 'ala alihi wa-ashaabihi haqqa qadrihi wa-miq-da rihil-'azim.

Ka'b bin 'Uzrah (Razi Allah Ta'lah Anhu) met me. He said, "Shall I not give you a present (of a tradition) I hear from the Prophet? 'Yes' I said, 'give me.'. Ka'b bin 'Uzrah (Razi Allah Ta'lah Anhu) said : We asked the Messenger of Allah and enquired: O Prophet of Allah! How shall be the blessings invoked on you, the people of the House? Because Allah has taught us how we shall greet you. He said: Say: O Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as you had blessed Abraham and the family of Abraham. Verily you are the Praised, the Glorious. O Allah, bestow favours on Muhammad and on the family of Muhammad as you had bestowed favours on Abraham and on the family of Abraham."

Narrated by Abdur-Rahman bin Abi Laila (Razi Allah Ta'lah Anhu); Sahih Bukhari and Muslim transmitted it. Hadith No. 919 of Mishkat al-Masabih.

Dillu Ram Kausari

Dillu Ram Kausari: The Hindu Poet who Loved The Prophet Muhammad Salla Allahu ta'ala'alayhi wa sallam.

When the British still ruled India there lived, in Delhi, a well-known Hindu poet by the name of Dillu Ram Kausari. Now, this poet, though a Hindu, wrote encomiums and poems [na’at] in praise of the Prophet Muhammad (upon him be blessings and peace.) He became famous for writing such poetry and his poems became well known to such an extent that it scandalised his fellow Hindus who accosted him and said, “Dillu Ram, what is the matter with you? You have disgraced the name of Hindus! You are a Hindu and yet you sing praises of and write poetry praising the Prophet of the Muslims?”
“Do not stop me”, answered Dillu Ram, “for I am forced to write such poetry.”

“Who or what is forcing you?” his fellow Hindus asked.
“I am forced by my love,” he cried. “I have fallen in love with the Prophet!”
“How can you, being a Hindu, fall in love with the Muslims’ Prophet?” they asked, perplexed.
To this Dillu Ram replied, “’Love is not forced it just happens’”.
“How much do you love the Prophet then?” they asked him, still astonished that one of their own could love the Prophet. To this Dillu Ram wept like a lover departed from his beloved and recited a poem of his. He said:

Kuch ‘ishq e Muhammad mein nahin shart e Musulman!
Hai Kausari Hindu bhii talabgaar e Muhammad!
Allah re! kyaa raunaq e bazaar e Muhammad
Ke Ma’bood e Jahan bhi hai kharidaar e Muhammad!

Being a Muslim is not a condition for loving Muhammad!
Kausari, the Hindu, is also a seeker of Muhammad!
By Allah! How delightful is the bazaar of Muhammad
For the Lord of the Worlds is also a buyer of Muhammad!
